Why did Pat LaFontaine bail on the Sabres organization?

Leave it to Bob Gaughan to take the same information we all have and turn it into something you won’t believe hadn’t crossed your mind.

Bob joins me on the podcast to talk about a ridiculously busy week in Buffalo sports news. LaFontaine, Sabres trades, Jairus Byrd, the Bills in Toronto series… we hit it all in under 19 minutes.

Press play.

  1. It isn’t a shocking or original theory, but it’s the closest to align with what my feelings are. I think they brought LaFontaine to create immediate good will for the veteran players, to show them that the team cares about people and players.
My theory on Nolan is a bit different than anything I’ve heard. I think they know he is good at developing players, but brought him in specifically to work on players whose game has dropped off this season. Nolan nearly solely talked about Myers for his first two months here, and he has Myers looking good.  Now he’s been talking a lot about Foligno and Stafford getting on track. I think he is working on making sure specific players become more consistent, confident and understand the talent they possess.
Nolan’s “bond” or “allegiance” with LaFontaine is very confusing to me. Patty has bolted on him in both his Islanders position and the Sabres position, and Nolan still feels some kind of loyalty to him.  I don’t want Nolan coaching the team, but if they promised him a place in the organization, he should end up somewhere in player development or as the coach of the Amerks (unless his pride gets in the way).
