Take the cash mob formula and apply it to local establishments that have, even more than the most ardent fans, been anxiously awaiting the return of NHL hockey.

mob1We have an idea.

What’s a cash mob?

The word goes out on Twitter: the name of local shop or tavern, an address, a date and a time. At the appointed hour, dozens upon dozens of customers appear at the business’s doorstep, with money in hand. Maybe a TV news camera crew shows up as well, to document that latest Buffalo Cash Mob.

Local businesses make money on the spot and gain new customers. Consumers learn about establishments they might otherwise have overlooked and meet the proprietors. It’s simple and perfect.

Who has been hurt the most by the NHL lockout?

Local businesses. Bars and restaurants, downtown and elsewhere, rely heavily upon increased traffic on game nights. Usually the season starts in October. Here we are, three months later, awaiting the release of a 48 game schedule.

What’s the obvious solution?

HOCKEY MOBS!

Take the cash mob formula and apply it to local establishments that have, even more than the most ardent fans, been anxiously awaiting the return of NHL hockey.

Now that the season is finally upon us, we’ll take suggestions for where to assemble and then, on game nights, go out and pour some money into the places that have been hurting the most over the past 3 months. The way we see it, weeknight games will be the best candidates to really impact the bottom line for these local businesses. With any luck, we can get some other organizations involved and really have a positive impact on the local economy.

  1. Couple suggestions so far.

mikec4335  #IrishTimes on Swan. Co-worker of mine said they were hit hard w/ lockout. Good atmosphere. Good food.

mikesenbusch one spot would be @gowithgordons on delaware. Great spot for the game hit hard by lockout. Lets fill the place up

  2. ‏mspowers  I’m in, I’d say start a little farther up, plenty of good hockey bars that won’t get the immediate shot #hertel

iamshawnmurphy  Great idea. Start down by the arena (cobblestone, lagerhaus, Liberty) and work up. One bar, once a week.

  3. This is a fantastic idea, but it should be multiple bars at a time. Nothing worse than having everyone show up at one place. A bar which is too crowded is actually a negative. Maybe one city bar, one northtown bar and one southtown bar each day you do this. Gives people a bit of an option.

  4. I suggest the Pam Am Brewery. It’s a new place inside the Lafayette and I’m sure thought they would benefit a lot from Sabres games. Also think Irish Times on Washington would be a great choice.

  6. The Irish Times and The Washington Square have been th mainstay of feeding hockey crowds for the past twenty seven years, both locally owned and operated , they have been devestated by this strike, your help would be greatly appreciated. @

  7. The Irish Times is a favored stop for this hockey fan – I know they could use the boost. Please consider them for #hockeymob during an upcoming night home game! @irishtimes14203

  8. Marinaro’s Larkin Tavern is located at 131 Van rensselaer street one block from the Larkin Building in the heart of Larkinville. It is a vintage Buffalo Tavern taken over by the Marinaro family 2yrs ago. Great food and drink at very reasonable prices 2 minutes from the Arena. The Tavern is loaded with vintage Buffalo sports memorabilia, from original Buffalo Braves pennants to seats from the Rockpile. It is a hidden gem in Buffalo! Perfect place for a hockey mob! I know the owners would appreciate the business boost, because I am one of them.Hope to see you all there soon!!
