Bob Gaughan watches more college football than anyone you know. We asked him for his quick thoughts on the top prospects in this year’s NFL Draft. (If you start following him on Twitter, maybe he’ll even start tweeting.)
Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee – Proved to be better than Justin Hunter. Started out hot vs NC State and never looked back.
DeAndre Hopkins Clemson – Came from shadow of Sammy Watkins this year. Deceiving speed and strength.
Terrance Williams, Baylor – Had huge game against WV (17 Catches 304 yards) and Kansas State. Love him.
Keenan Allen, Cal – Half brother of former UB QB Zach Maynard. Despite teams keying on him had a great year catching 98 balls.
Tavon Austin, West Virginia – Signature game against Oklahoma with 572 total yards. Darren Sproles/Percy Harvin type of player.
Quinton Patton, Louisiana Tech – Turned heads at Senior Bowl. Punt returner too. Helped La Tech average over 50 points per game this year.
Justin Hunter, Tennessee – Lets the ball get too close to his body. Had a disappointing year. Key drops on a bomb against Alabama and on third down pass vs Florida.
Robert Woods, USC – Love the way he runs routes. Not as flashy as teammate Lee but I believe a better all around WR.
Markus Wheaton, Oregon State – See him in tapes vs Cal 10 yards behind the CB. Can’t teach it.
Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame – Only passing threat ND had most of year.
Zach Ertz, Stanford – Key TD in upset of Oregon. Stanford uses TE’s as well as any school.
Vance McDonald, Rice – Gil Brandt loves this guy. Had big bowl game. Remember James Casey came from this school too. Same position.
Gavin Escobar, San Diego State – Height (6’5) creates tough match-ups. Hybrid between a WR/TE.
Travis Kelce, Cincinnati – Came on late with 3 TDs against UConn in last regular season win and big bowl game. Brother of Eagles guard Jason Kelce.
